Piano Cleaning & Care: Piano Artisans’ Recommendations

Following these care techniques will help protect your piano and its value for years to come.

Recommended Supplies:

  • Clean Microfiber Cloths (3, with tags removed)
  • Anti-Static Spray (e.g., Static Guard)
  • Mild Dish Soap

Remove all jewelry before dusting or cleaning to prevent scratches.

Dusting Instructions (Interior and Exterior):

Supplies:

  • Clean microfiber cloths (with tags removed)
  • Anti-static spray
  1. Lightly spray a clean microfiber cloth with anti-static spray (about 2 seconds per side). Never spray the piano directly, as this can void your warranty.
  2. Allow the spray to dry for 10-15 seconds.
  3. Gently dust the piano’s surfaces. Avoid applying pressure; focus on lifting dust, not scrubbing.
  4. If the dust smears instead of lifting, the piano requires cleaning (see instructions below).
  5. Reapply anti-static spray to the cloth as needed during dusting (typically 2-3 times).

Cleaning Instructions (Exterior Finish):

Supplies:

  • Damp microfiber cloths (with tags removed)
  • Dry microfiber cloths (with tags removed)
  • Mild dish soap
  • Water
  1. Dampen a microfiber cloth with water (it should be damp, not dripping).
  2. Add a few drops of dish soap to the damp cloth, add a bit more water to create light suds, then wring out excess moisture.
  3. Using gentle circular motions, clean the piano’s finish in small sections.
  4. Immediately buff each cleaned section dry with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Avoid applying excessive pressure while buffing, as this can alter the finish’s sheen.
  5. If you miss a spot and it dries with soap residue, repeat the cleaning and buffing process for that area.

Key Top Cleaning Instructions (Ivory, Acrylic, or Plastic):

Supplies:

  • Damp microfiber cloths (with tags removed)
  • Dry microfiber cloths (with tags removed)
  • Mild dish soap
  • Water
  1. Dampen a microfiber cloth with water (it should be damp, not dripping).
  2. Add a few drops of dish soap to the damp cloth, add a bit more water to create light suds, then wring out as much moisture as possible.
  3. Gently wipe the keys back and forth with the damp cloth. Pay close attention to the front edges of the keys, as they are particularly delicate.
  4. Be careful not to scratch or ding the fallboard or nameboard with your fingernails.
  5. Ensure no water drips down the sides of the keys. If dripping occurs, wring out the cloth more thoroughly and repeat the wiping process. A small amount of moisture won’t harm the keys, but excessive water should be avoided.
  6. Wipe each key dry with a clean, dry microfiber cloth immediately after cleaning.
  7. Repeat the process across the entire keyboard, re-dampening the cloth as needed, especially if the keys are heavily soiled.
